Food, Medical Supplies and Apprenticeship Opportunities for Talibé Children in Senegal

There are close to 15,000 talibé children between the ages of 3 and 22 in the city of Saint Louis alone, living in close to 200 daaras.

Arouna Kandé was one of these children.  Arouna was sent at the age of nine from his home in Kolda to a daara in Saint Louis, where he was brutally abused.   A friend from his daara introduced him to Maison de la Gare in 2010, and he began to learn French.  We recognized Arouna’s promise and have supported him though formal schooling.  Arouna persisted, often doing his homework by moonlight in his daara.  He is now a confident and literate young man, completing his bac while working as our administrative assistant.

Dozens of boys are now participating in our tailoring, poultry farming and agricultural apprenticeship programs, determined to get the skills they need to become self-sufficient, in many cases in their home communities.

We need your help to continue.  Please support our project to provide food, medical supplies and materials for apprenticeship materials for 50 children.
