Improved Nutrition 4 Healthy Genaration

Poor health is one of the major factors behind increased poverty level among community members in Masindi, families spend a lot of resources treating preventable diseases and a lot of productive time is wasted hence ‘locking’ them in vicious circle of poverty, this is worse with the prevailing rate of malnutrition among the community members especially the young children. In Uganda, 33% percent of children under five are stunted or short for their age and 14 percent are severely stunted, 5 percent of children under five are wasted (low weight for height), and 2 percent are severely wasted. ( Uganda Bureau of Statistics -2011 demographic health survey) Anaemia is one of the most widespread forms of malnutrition world-wide and is associated with morbidity, mortality and lost schooling. In Masindi District, most communities members are engaged in commercial production of sugar cane, Tobacco, and maize, giving little attention to other food crops production. This leads to food insecurity in most households which even worsens nutrition for the family, for instance, some families depend on maize and beans. They take porridge from Maize and posho, and beans year in year out, no balanced diet. Hence there is need for community empowerment and awareness creation on good nutrition. This is a two year Project which will focus on improving Health and nutrition with underlying causes like; food insecurity, ignorance, poverty among others . This will be achieved through Distribution of nutrient rich food varieties: Capacity building in nutrition sensitive agriculture, diverse food preparation methods and consumption of balanced diets, Establishment of Demonstration garden, Training in Post-harvest handling, Distribution and dissemination of Food and security and nutritional ordinance, Promotion of alternative income source/enterprises, organizing community dialogue meetings and District stakeholders meetings Project activities: Objective 1: To promote production and utilization of diverse nutrition foods in Bwijanga, Pakanyi and Miirya sub counties Masindi District Strategy 1: Increase production of nutrients rich food in Masindi district 1.1 Launch of the Project This will be a one day’s activity to introduce the whole project the District and Local leaders and other stakeholders, this is to enable them own the project and give all the necessary support during the implementation of the project as well mobilizing the community members towards the implementation process 1.2 Establishment of Demonstration garden: Demonstration learning site will be established at 6 parishes in the sub counties of Bwijanga, Pakanyi and Miirya sub counties, this will be a learning center for the beneficiaries, there will be variety of nutrient-rich food crops introduced in the demonstration garden, this is where the households will have to adopt the technologies for their homestead so as to produce nutrient-rich foods 1.3 Distribution and dissemination of Food and security and nutritional ordinance: Masindi district has Food security and nutrition ordinance which is not yet known by the community members, therefore, the Organisation will print 1000 copies and distribute it to the community members, to create awareness on the ordinance, to compel homesteads to increase acreage under food production 1.4 Distribution of nutrient rich food varieties to 320 homesteads: The project beneficiaries will be provided with nutrient rich foods that can be produced locally to help boost nutrition in the homesteads and increase on food security, vulnerable homesteads will identified with the help of the Village local councils and will be supported with seeds for the nutritious crops to enable them produce nutrient-rich foods 1.5 Training and Promotion of alternative income source/enterprises for 16 Cooperative groups: The Organisation will mobilize the community members in the area of operation to form 8 cooperative association of maximum 75 people in each, they will be trained with agro-business skills so that they select one to be carried out by each of the 8 cooperative groups, supported to register with the government and support them with the seeds for starting their farming activity to enhance food security Strategy 2: increase awareness and utilization of different food varieties 1.6 Training in Post-harvest handling for 180 people The project beneficiaries households will be trained in post-harvest handling technologies, its discovered that most of the agricultural products are lost during harvest and some loses value due to poor handling by the farmers, this training will be organized at the parish level targeting 60 farmers in each of the training, this will reduce on the loses that occur during harvest and increase on food security 1.7 Capacity building for 180 people in nutrition sensitive agriculture, diverse food preparation methods and consumption of balanced diets Various methods will be used to sensitize household members on sensitive agriculture and diverse food preparation methods and consumption, to increase their knowledge on food preparation and nutrition, this will include; training, use of community Forum theatre drama shows, printing and distribution of IEC (Information Education Materials), recipe manuals and radio talk shows on local radios in Masindi District Objective 2: To increase provide a plate for the community members to engage with their leaders for social accountability Strategy 3: Increase commitment of the local leaders in the provision of proper public service delivery 2.1 Organize sub county community dialogue meetings This will be a platform where community members can raise the issues of concern in the area of health and Nutrition for the attention of the local leaders, this meeting will be held at sub county level targeting the Local council 3, Sub county chiefs, Community development officer, CSOs within the sub county, religious leaders, cultural leaders, teacher’s representatives, youth leaders and community members 2.2 conduct 6 community forum theatre drama shows and Radio talk shows There will be massive community awareness creation on proper and safe water usage, health and sanitation and good nutrition, this will be inform of forum theater drama shows, radio talk shows. 2.3 Organize stakeholder dialogue meeting This will be meeting where the District leaders will engage to answer and respond to issues from the community dialogue meetings which cannot be handled at sub county level
