Improved Health For Healthy Generation

Adequate nutrition is an essential precondition for maintaining health status of Children. The critical role nutrition plays in health and development warrants greater commitment to and investment. It starts early in infancy for children in Uganda, by extrapolation, at birth, about 11% of children are already stunted and about 16% are wasted. Malnutrition in childhood and pregnancy has many adverse consequences for child survival and long-term well-being. It also has far-reaching consequences for human capital, economic productivity, and national development overall. The project will focus on household nutrition and health with particular emphasis on children under 5 years old. Nutrition impacts on growth and development at all stages of human life and is the core focus of the project. Economic resilience however inevitably determines the nutritional status of every household. Each household will be involved in drawing a plan (care plan) of actions to be carried out by them and/or project officers to bring about improvement in the household’s situation in areas of nutrition, key household practices and economic activities. The project will build the capacity of households with proper practical demonstrable knowledge on food utilization and processing to meet the various nutritional requirements of each household member, build them on preventive, curative and rehabilitative nutrition and health measures/practices against malnutrition, particularly as it affects under 5s. It will distribute of nutrient rich food varieties, provide skills and capacity in nutrition sensitive agriculture; establish demonstration gardens and training in Post-harvest handling. It will also provide follow up and mentorship for existing cases of malnutrition in households with focused intensity on malnourished under 5 children. The project will incorporate Household economic strengthening interventions to build the households’/caregivers’ capacity to earn income to meet the needs of the households, particularly their nutritional needs.
